Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person’s height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m² where kg is a person’s weight in kilograms and m² is their height in meters squared.

BMI is an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category—underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity. BMI does not measure body fat directly, but research has shown that BMI correlates with more direct measures of body fat.

BMI Categories

BMI Range Weight Category
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 Normal weight
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0 and above Obesity

Limitations of BMI

While BMI can be a useful tool for identifying potential weight problems in adults, it has several limitations:

  • It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build.
  • It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle.
  • It doesn’t account for differences between men and women, various age groups, or different ethnicities.
  • It doesn’t distinguish between fat, muscle, and bone.

Important Note: BMI is just one measure of health. Other factors like waist circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, family history, and lifestyle choices should also be considered when assessing overall health. Always consult with healthcare providers for a comprehensive health assessment.
